Position Title: Library Assistant
Summary of job responsibilities: Performs a wide variety of general library work in technical and/or public services to assist patrons with daily operational needs of the library, such as cataloging, processing, circulation and shelving library materials; performs related duties as assigned.
Job duties: Provides service at the circulation desk including: preparing library for opening; checks materials in and out; greets and assists patrons with their information needs; answers the phone; registers new patrons; receives and resolves complaints or refers public to a director; collects and records fines and fees; assists supervisors with special projects; helps patrons in the use of the online catalog, internet resources, computers, copier, scanner, and faxing resources. Trains volunteers on computer system operation and library policies and procedures; participates in staff meetings to discuss and resolve problems, to discuss ideas for improvement, and to keep updated on library plans and activities; maintains library public area in clean and orderly fashion by maintaining displays, cleaning computer terminals and other facility cleaning and/or organizing tasks; performs other related duties as required. May be assigned to act as supervisor in the Director’s absence; provides training and/or team leadership; must participate in continuing education opportunities hosted by the state and/or region.
Programming: Plans and implements library programs, overseeing all aspects of the events and performs outreach and positive promotion of the library in the community; assists Library Director with various projects both within the library and in the community. Some examples of library programming are Stuff the Bus event in Rhea County and on-site classroom storytime.
Supervisory authority: Supervises volunteers
Special working conditions: Work is performed primarily in a library environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal or while standing at a counter for extended periods of time. Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and library materials from overhead and from the floor. Sufficient vision is essential to permit the employee to read, sort and shelve library materials and maintain patron and cataloging records.
Qualifications: High school diploma or GED is required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to make basic arithmetic calculations; skill in working with all age groups preferred; skill and experience in working with the public, both in person and by telephone; computer literacy and typing skills required; at least one year of work experience dealing with the public is preferred. Reliable transportation is a must.
